Queenstown is New Zealand’s premier snow destination and home to four ski resorts, The Remarkables, Cardrona, Coronet Peak and Treble Cone. An hour from Queenstown lies the smaller and less touristy town of Wanaka, set on the picturesque Lake Wanaka. Cardrona and Treble Cone are within 30-40 minutes’ drive from Wanaka.
Coronet Peak is the closest resort to Queenstown, an easy 20 minutes from town. A popular choice, with its night skiing and fast tracks options. Night skiing is offered from 4-9 pm up to 3 nights a week, and did we mention a DJ playing great beats, yummy pizzas, mulled wine and fire pits to keep you toasty.
The Remarkables is a local favourite and the place to go off-piste on a powder day. As the name suggests, the scenery is spectacular! It offers 3 sunny wide-open bowls and offers something for everyone.
Cardrona is the perfect place for beginners and intermediates and families with its dedicated kids centre. Home to the most extensive terrain park facilities in the Southern Hemisphere. The view from the top is stunning too! For those wanting to stay on the mountain, Cardrona has a handful of apartments.
Treble Cone has a reputation amongst advanced skiers and boarders thanks to its long vertical and challenging terrain. It is the largest of the South Island ski areas and is recognised for its uncrowded piste and off-piste trails. The views over Lake Wanaka aren’t too bad either…
On the northern tip of the South Island, in the Canterbury region, 90 minutes from Christchurch is Mt Hutt. A big mountain experience for skiers and boarders, boasting 365 ha of wide-open terrain and plenty of leg-burning runs. Mt Hutt is the closest resort to the quaint town of Methven.
