Let the Season Begin!
The 2021 New Zealand ski season has officially begun, and what a season it’s expected to be. Hanmer Springs is the first resort to open this week, followed by Mt Ruapehu opening tomorrow, 5th June. The Aussie’s will no doubt be there in abundance and we’re excited for some Trans-Tasman snow action!
Some of the best family friendly resorts can be found in New Zealand’s South Island… not to mention some world class Heli-skiing. The options in New Zealand are endless, and the great part is, NZ offers multi-resort lift passes. So you can experience a number of resorts during your stay.
Which Resort to Pick?
Coronet Peak is a more popular resort, offering breath-taking views. It caters to all skill levels, offers extensive snow making facilities, has an efficient lift system and is just a 30 min drive from Queenstown airport.
The Remarkables offers incredible scenery, and is very family friendly. It’s the closest resort to Queenstown (35 mins) and has some of the best terrain parks in NZ. It’s a fantastic place to learn to ski, yet one of the smaller ski areas – but great for families.
Treble cone offers plenty of off-piste, natural free-ride terrain. It’s the largest ski area on the South Island (40 mins to Wanaka), offering steeper runs, suited for intermediate and experts. It also offers New Zealand’s highest annual snowfall, but does have limited beginner terrain.
Cardrona is best known for families, and a convenient location. There’s wider runs, ideal for beginners, modern infrastructure, new terrain and lift, plus a board park – and just 35 minutes to Wanaka it’s also convenient.
Queenstown – the Adventure Capital
Queenstown is the adventure capital of the Southern Hemisphere, located on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by spectacular towering mountains. It is your gateway to the nearby Remarkables, Coronet Peak and Cardrona ski fields. The town is a buzz of entertainment, bars and dining options to cater to all budgets. The world class slopes are easily accessible with Coronet Peak just 20 minutes away, featuring a brand new gondola taking you up the mountain. The Remarkables is a 40 minute drive and offers unbeatable terrain and facilities for everyone from the first time skier to the seasoned shredder.
Heli-ski New Zealand
New Zealand Heli-skiing is up there with the best in the world, offering something for everyone.
New Zealand caters for all skill levels and interests. Mt Cook is definitely the place to be for more experienced Heli-skiers, similar to the CMH Canada programs and just as incredible. For those looking to mix it up and try some off-piste Heli-skiing along with some regular resort skiing, Wanaka and Queenstown are the best picks.
Small Group, Private Tours – Imagine owning the untouched, free range powder slopes of NZ’s South Island, just you and a few friends. These Heli-ski tours operate with small groups of 4-6, so get your friends together for an exclusive, private Heli-group tour.
